Spindle Roughing Gouge – Handled

  • Spindle roughing gouge has a 45 degree grind and polished flute.
  • Like all of Robusts gouges, it is milled from solid High Speed Steel and give their proprietary Nitriding treatment.
  • Spindle roughing gouges are for turning spindles, not bowls!
  • The 12″ handle is premium hard maple with polyurethane finish and stainless steel ferrule.

Bowl Gouge – Handled

  • Bowl gouge features a parabolic flute and is made from nitrided high speed steel.
  • It is shipped sharp and ground with a double bevel.
  • Robust uses the American method of gouge measurement, which means the shank is 5/8″ diameter.
  • Parabolic flutes give a great combination of strength and chip ejection.
  • They are amenable to finger nail (Ellsworth or Irish) grinds, conventional bowl gouge grinds and the “40/40” grind.
  • The handle is hard rock maple and turned for us in Pennsylvania. The ferrule is stainless steel.
  • 3/8" Bowl Gouge comes with 12" handle

Detail/Spindle Gouge – Handled

  • The spindle/detail gouge has a polished flute with a shallow radius.
  • Like all of Robusts gouges, it is made from Nitrided high speed steel.
  • Robust uses the American method of gouge measurement, which means the shank is 5/8″ diameter.
  • Shipped with a 45 degree grind, many turners sharpen these types of gouges to a sharper angle to get into tighter spots, and some add a secondary bevel for more relief.
  • Many turners who are primarily bowl turners find these much friendlier for spindle turning than using a skew.
  • The handle is hard maple with a stainless steel ferrule.
  • 1/2" Detail Spindle Gouge comes with 16" handle
  • 3/8" Detail Spindle Gouge comes with 12" handle
  • 5/8" Detail Spindle Gouge comes with 16" handle

American made HSS Turning Tools by Robust Tools

Sizing: We use the American method of measuring gouges.  So, for instance, a 5/8″ gouge is made from slightly oversize 5/8″ diameter material with the shank turned to 5/8″.

Bowl Gouges:  All feature polished parabolic flutes and are made from premium Nitrided high speed tool steel.  They are shipped sharp and ground with a double bevel.  Parabolic flutes give a great combination of strength and chip ejection.  They are amenable to finger nail (Ellsworth or Irish) grinds, conventional bowl gouge grinds and the “40/40” grind. The tools are just as easy to grind as regular HSS, and sharpen well on conventional and CBN wheels.

Spindle/Detail Gouges: All have a radius flute that matches the diameter of the stock, and they are also made from premium high speed steel with our proprietary Nitriding treatment.

Flat Milled: All bowl gouges and spindle/detail gouges are flat milled on the top and you can use your sharpening jig over the full length of the tool.

Spindle Roughing Gouge: Our spindle roughing gouge is milled from solid 1 1/4″ diameter HSS and nitrided.  The shank is turned to 5/8″ diameter.

Handles: All are available handled and unhandled.  Handles are made from hard rock maple turned for us in Pennsylvania with a stainless steel ferrule.  Our collet based handles also work very well with our gouges.
