Beginner Turning Class Info

  • Classes are held right here at Turners Warehouse
  • No turning experience is required for these Beginner Classes.
  • Under the tutelage of expert turner Chad Schimmel you will turn and finish your item. At the end of this class you will have a finished product to show off to your friends and family!
  • For groups of 4-8 people please contact Amy to schedule classes - amy@turnerswarehouse.com
  • Book 1 for yourself or gift to a loved one.
  • You could also book 2 spots and bring a date, parent, child*, or special someone!

***Please NOTE classes must be 50% full to run. If a class does not meet the registration class will be rescheduled or refunded. ****

1.What is the minimum age to participate?

*Must be 18+ years old to participate in turning classes

2.What safety gear is needed?

Please bring safety glasses and respirator. We have them available for purchase if you do not have any. Please do not wear loose clothing, long sleeves should be rolled up, closed toed shoes required. Long hair needs to be pulled back.

3.How long is the class?

Beginner Classes will be approximately 90-120 minutes depending on the content. Approximate times are listed.

4.Where is the class located?

We host these classes here at Turners Warehouse. Come on down to the shop!

Inlay Ring Class

  • Instructor: Chad Schimmel
  • Length: Approximately 2 hours
  • Required: Eye protection & Respirator
  • Tools & Supplies: will be provided
  • You will have a hands on experience making a stainless steel inlay channel ring that you get to take home with you at the end of the class.
  • You will learn how to use UV Resin to inlay stone or opal in a Stainless Steel Inlay Ring Core using the Ring Maker Station, polish and finish on the lathe.

Bowl Turning Class

  • Instructor: Chad Schimmel
  • Length: Approximately 2.5 hours
  • Required: Eye protection & Respirator
  • Tools & Supplies: will be provided
  • You will learn about basic small bowl turning.
  • You will have a chance to practice these skills and take home your small bowl

Tubed Kit Class

  • Instructor: Chad Schimmel
  • Length: Approximately 2 hours
  • Required: Eye protection & Respirator
  • Tools & Supplies: will be provided
  • You will learn about basic safety, lathe use, beginning turning skills.
  • You will have a chance to practice and turn your own wood body tubed kit that you get to take home at the end of the class. Choose between turning a pen, a seam ripper or a key chain

Private Lessons

  • This 90 minute lesson is on the topic of your choice!
  • Pick Chads brain and fine tune your skills in turning, resin casting, tube in blank making, watch parts, kitless pen turning, etc.
  • Day and time to be determined after purchase based on your and Chads availability.

Safety Rules for Turning Classes

  • Safety equipment, including safety glasses, face shields, and dust masks, are required at all times while operating the lathe (including watching) as required for the class you are taking.
  • Long hair must be tied back/secured at all times in the shop.
  • Closed toed shoes are always required in the shop.
  • Clothing that is loose fitting or could be potentially caught in the rotating parts of the lathe are not allowed. Roll up long sleeves past the elbows.
  • Jewelry that hangs or dangles are not allowed, and rings, earrings and necklaces should be removed prior to entering the shop.
  • Make sure you understand basic use and instructions before operating. Ask questions if you are unsure.
  • Always be aware of the ‘safety stop’ location and know where the start/stop buttons are before turning on your lathe.
  • Keep lathe and lathe area clear of miscellaneous items/never set items on the lathe.
  • Never leave a running lathe unattended. Wait until the lathe has come to a complete stop before stepping away.
  • Turn off the lathe when talking about your piece, asking questions, etc. Always keep your focus on your work when the lathe is on.
  • Use tools only as instructed and for intended use.
  • Allow your lathe to come to a full and complete stop before adjusting the tool rest.
  • Only participate if you are healthy, alert, and aware. Turning/attending classes while under the influence is prohibited.
  • Follow all safety instructions and directions. Failure to do so will result in your being asked to leave the class without refund.
